Lady Gaga Dissolves Relationship With Target

Singer has reportedly cut ties with retailer over its political donations and their effect on the LGBT community.

Cue the “Bad Romance” headlines. Lady Gaga and Target have dissolved their relationship. According to The Advocate, the pop superstar has decided not to work with the retail megastore.

“She and Target didn’t see eye to eye on Target’s policy of political donations and how they affect the LGBT community,” a source close to the store told the magazine. It was announced in February that Gaga and Target would be working together to release an exclusive deluxe edition of Gaga’s May 23 release, Born This Way.

“Target and Lady Gaga together is a win-win,” Troy Carter, Lady Gaga’s manager, said in a statement at the time. “The partnership provides us with an opportunity to really engage the fans early and widen our reach on the album promotion.”

Shortly after the announcement, however, LGBT groups began revisiting certain donations that the store had made. Last year, Target donated corporate funds to MN Forward, a political action committee that supported antigay candidate Tom Emmer in his 2010 run for governor of Minnesota.

Gaga did acknowledge the issue in a recent interview with Billboard, noting that she hoped to work with the retailer to change its policies. “That discussion was one of the most intense conversations I’ve ever had in a business meeting,” Gaga said. “Part of my deal with Target is that they have to start affiliating themselves with LGBT charity groups and begin to reform and make amends for the mistakes they’ve made in the past. … Our relationship is hinged upon their reform in the company to support the gay community and to redeem the mistakes they’ve made supporting those [antigay] groups.”

A rep for the store had not responded to MTV News’ request for comment at press time.

On the East Coast, revenue streams are slowly rising as banks are still cratering and trying to recover from the recession. But out West, money ain’t a thing, as Jermaine Dupri and Jay-Z once rapped.

Forbes has released their list of Hollywood’s 20 Highest Earners of 2010, with Beyoncé, Lady Gaga and Miley Cyrus among those rubbing elbows with the likes of power players like Oprah Winfrey.

The venerable talk-show host topped the list with a whopping $315 million haul. Winfrey’s earnings were generated for the most part by her multimedia deals, which include a syndication deal for her TV show, a magazine and her soon-to-be-launched network.

“Avatar” creator James Cameron came in second, more than $100 million behind Winfrey, with a tally of $210 million. Director and playwright Tyler Perry ($125 million), blockbuster movie producer Michael Bay ($120 million) and golfer Tiger Woods ($105 million) rounded out the top five.

Beyoncé was the only pop star to break the top 10. The “Single Ladies” superstar landed at #9, sandwiched between George Lucas and Dr. Phil. Mrs. Carter, whose hubby, Jay-Z, was named Hip-Hop’s Cash King by Forbes in August with a tally of $63 million, pulled down $87 million over the past 12 months.

The blond-haired trio of Britney Spears ($64 million), Lady Gaga ($62 million) and Madonna ($58 million) made their mark on the list at numbers 13, 14 and 15, respectively.

Pop tarts Miley Cyrus and Taylor Swift capped the list. The young stars placed at 18 and 19 on the list, with Disney star Cyrus pocketing $48 million, and country singer Swift depositing $45 million into her bank account.

Hollywood’s 20 highest-earning men and women of 2010, according to Forbes:

1. Oprah Winfrey, $315 million
2. James Cameron, $210 million
3. Tyler Perry, $125 million

Ne-Yo Creating ‘I Heart Tuesday’ For Cartoon Network

Singer says animated series will follow a teenage girl’s fight against evil.

Ne-Yo might be a singer, songwriter and actor, but he’s looking to expand his résumé even further by creating his very own show. In an interview with the Associated Press, the “Beautiful Monster” star revealed that he has inked a deal with Cartoon Network to produce an animated series.

The show, which he said he created for his sister, is called “I Heart Tuesday” and is expected to begin production soon. As for the plot of the show, Ne-Yo said the forthcoming series is about “a 16-year-old girl that inherits the curse of her bloodline and she’s forced to save the world from the unknown evil every Tuesday for the rest of her life.”

In addition to the animated series, the 31-year-old singer revealed he’s creating a line of hats. This isn’t the first time Ne-Yo has spoken about other business ventures. Back in August, the hitmaker told MTV Style, “I’ve been talking to some people about doing a hat line, in that the hat is what I’m most known for,” the singer said. “It’s odd that the hat is more popular than the music? And possibly a fragrance, but I don’t know what I smell like, so I don’t know if I want people to smell like me. I mean, I know I don’t stink. But everything is in conversation right now.”

In the meantime, fans can catch the entertainer in the sci-fi flick “Battle: Los Angeles,” which hit theaters Friday (March 11).

Beyonce Donated Gadhafi Money To Haiti Relief Last Year

Music industry urges other stars who played for Libyan dictator’s family to donate their earnings.

Just days after singer Nelly Furtado announced that she planned to donate to charity money she received for playing a concert for the family of Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi, a spokesperson for Beyoncé said that the “Halo” singer had already done the same.

Documents obtained by the WikiLeaks website revealed that stars including Beyoncé, Usher and Mariah Carey had played big-paycheck gigs for Gadhafi. On Monday, Rolling Stone magazine reported that the industry was urging the stars (noting that rapper 50 Cent had also played such gigs) to return the money they earned for the concerts.

“They’ve done it for tons of artists,” an unnamed music-business source told the magazine about lavish parties by Gadhafi’s son, Muatassim, which are reportedly often “jammed” with supermodels. “Those guys are all over the world.”

On Wednesday, a rep for Beyoncé — who played a New Year’s Eve gig for Muatassim with Usher on the Caribbean island of St. Barts in 2009 — told the Huffington Post that the singer had long ago resolved the matter.

“All monies paid to Beyoncé for her performance at a private party at Nikki Beach St. Barts on New Year’s Eve 2009, including the commissions paid to her booking agency, were donated to the earthquake relief efforts for Haiti over a year ago,” her publicist said. “Once it became known that the third-party promoter was linked to the Qaddafi family, the decision was made to put that payment to a good cause.”

The money was donated to the Clinton-Bush Haiti Fund, established in the wake of last year’s devastating earthquake, and a spokesperson for the fund confirmed that it received the $1 million check in the weeks after the January 2010 earthquake.

According to her official Twitter feed, Canadian pop star Nelly Furtado confirmed on Monday that she once did a show for the dictator’s family and now plans to donate the money to charity. “In 2007, I received 1million$ from the Gadhafi clan to perform a 45 min. show for guests at a hotel in Italy,” she wrote on Monday. “I am going to donate the $.”

The star-studded shows were part of the extravagant lifestyle of the dictator’s sons, whose splashy parties and out-of-control spending have angered their countrymen, many of whom wallow in poverty as the Gadhafi clan benefits from the country’s oil riches.

Britney Spears Says ‘Till The World Ends’ Has ‘Good Energy’

‘If it puts me in a good mood, it clicks for me,’ singer tells Ryan Seacrest of Ke$ha-penned track.

Britney Spears got her fans amped up for her forthcoming album, Femme Fatale, when she released its second single, “Till the World Ends,” on Thursday. The chugging, Ke$ha-penned club banger is all about getting your dance on. And when Spears stopped by Ryan Seacrest’s radio show on Friday (March 4), she admitted that the song just felt right for her as soon as she heard it.

” ‘Till the World Ends’ is fun! It’s fun. I like it. It’s good energy,” she said of the track, which was produced by Dr. Luke, Max Martin and Billboard. “I’m a vibe person, and I think I love good-mood songs, and if it puts me in a good mood, it clicks for me.”

As for the album, which already spawned a chart-topping single, “Hold It Against Me,” she teased, “I think it’s my best work yet. I listened to it on the way over here. It’s definitely something you want to work out to. … And I’m a dancer, so it’s definitely something I can work with.”

“Oh my God! Will.i.am is amazing,” Spears said of the producer, who teased the track “The Big Fat Bass” recently. “He’s so much fun and he’s funny and he’s a charm. His music is so much fun. When they told me I was going to be working with him, I couldn’t wait. If it gets you going, you get excited, and he has that type of energy.”

In addition to talking about the album, Spears also shared plans for a summer tour. And she talked about how she’s keeping in shape these days as she amps up to promote the album, which drops March 29. “I have a trainer. [I go] on the treadmill for 30 minutes and we do a lot of cardio, running,” she explained. “He kicks my butt. You pay to hate your trainer!”

It seems that the workout regimen has also had an effect on her beau, talent agent Jason Trawick, who, according to Seacrest, was “pudgy” before he hooked up with the pop star. “He wasn’t pudgy,” she laughed. “He wasn’t pudgy. He is definitely ripped. He just got on this health kick. I guess he’s on a health kick. He eats what he wants.”

Is Beyonce Almost Finished With Her New Album?

‘I probably won’t get on this album, but hopefully the next one,’ singer/songwriter Sia says of song she pitched for Beyonce’s new album.
By James Dinh

As Britney Spears and Lady Gaga gear up to release new albums, there’s another pop heavyweight who may offer them some friendly competition: Beyoncé. Details surrounding the singer’s next album remain scarce, but according to a few of the project’s collaborators, Bey is almost finished recording the follow-up to 2008′s I Am … Sasha Fierce and has managed to hit the studio with an extensive list of producers.

After gushing about her high hopes for working with Beyoncé, Australian songstress Sia revealed that she told B’s behind-the-scenes team that she wanted to lend a creative hand for the new album. “So I just said to all the producers, writers, everyone, help me make this happen, and then Diplo e-mailed me and said, ‘where are you in the world right now? would you be interested in flying to New York? I’m writing with Beyoncé,’ and I was like, ‘Yesss!’ ” the singer told MTV Australia.

Despite Diplo’s offer, Sia said she was unable to fly out because of schedule conflicts, but is in the process of pitching songs to Beyoncé. When asked if her submissions were for Beyoncé’s forthcoming LP, Sia said, “Well, there’s only one song left for this album, so I probably won’t get on this album, but hopefully the next one. That’s my dream, that’s my goal.”

Sia isn’t the only collaborator that has suggested Beyoncé is close to wrapping up studio sessions for the project. Sleigh Bells have confirmed working with the singer, but are weary on whether their work with the songstress will make the final cut. Speaking with NME.com, guitarist Derek Miller admitted, “I actually have no idea if the collaboration will ever be released.”

While Miller remained tight-lipped on details regarding the song (or songs?), the Sleigh Bells bandmate confessed that the collabo is just one of her many musical partnerships, saying, “Beyoncé works with whoever she wants to work with, probably 30 or 40 producers. It’s a totally different world from what I’m used to. So for me, it’s just exciting to hear something that I worked on but I can’t really say any more than that.”

Sia and the Sleigh Bells join a long list of other collaborators who have been tapped to work on Beyoncé’s new album, including Ne-Yo, S1, Jim Jonsin, Sean “The Pen” Garrett, The-Dream and Tricky Stewart.

Who do you want to see Beyoncé collaborate with on her new album? Share your suggestions in the comments.

Lady Gaga Cover Artist Maria Aragon Is A ‘Born Superstar,’ Fan Says

Jyll Saskin dishes to MTV News about Gaga’s Toronto show set with the YouTube sensation.
By Jocelyn Vena

On Thursday night, Mother Monster treated one of her littlest monsters to the ultimate experience by bringing her up onstage during her Toronto tour stop.

Lady Gaga sat 10-year-old Maria Aragon on her lap before they both began playing piano and singing “Born This Way.” It was a moment that brought not only Gaga to tears, but fans in the audience too. One fan, Jyll Saskin, told MTV News that the moment was “really sweet.”

“Maria came out looking all adorable with her fedora hat and a [stuffed] monkey. It was really cute,” Saskin recalled. “So Gaga sat at the piano, pulled Maria onto her lap, and then did a beautiful, soulful rendition of ‘Born This Way’ together, trading off verses. Maria played the piano, while Gaga played a bit with her right hand as well. Gaga was very, very into the performance, closing her eyes and arching back a lot and definitely getting lost in the song. It was outstanding.”

Gaga became visibly teary-eyed during the performance, and Saskin said she wasn’t the only one. “I had tears in my eyes by the end and Gaga did, too — her mascara was visibly running down her face. After the song, Maria thanked her family … and then told us all to stay tuned because she’d be back after ‘Bad Romance.’ ”

As promised, Aragon did reemerge onstage. Saskin explained, “I understand that ‘Bad Romance’ is typically the finale, but Gaga came back to do ‘Born This Way’ again, similar to her Grammy performance, organ and everything. When she was at the organ part, Maria came back out and then they sang and danced the last bit together. At the end, when Gaga and the group of dancers are all together doing the ‘paws-up’ thing, Maria did the choreography with them. When the song was over, Gaga and Maria hugged. It was really special. I think everyone in the audience was head over heels in love with Maria by that point, but also 100 percent jealous.”

Sure, fans may have envied Maria’s spot onstage, but she had the full support of the little monsters in the audience, according to Saskin. “The crowd definitely loved the whole Maria bit. There were massive cheers when she came out, massive cheers when she spoke, and while she was singing ‘Born This Way’ at the piano with Gaga, it was so quiet in the audience; it was like everyone was in a trance. It was really magical.

“Maria is a born superstar — she spoke so eloquently and didn’t seem nervous at all. I mean, she’s sitting on freaking Lady Gaga’s lap at the Air Canada Center, 24,000 some-odd people, and she didn’t skip a beat.”

While Maria’s performance stood out as a highlight, Saskin also was moved during another part of the night, when the pop star showed off some acrobatic moves. ” ‘You and I,’ I think it was my favorite of the night. Gaga was in her studded bra and underwear, and she played piano and belted it out like a pro. … So we had Gaga, playing piano and singing, right heel on the piano, left heel balanced against a freaking guitar string. It was epic, and the song was amazing.”

What do you think of Gaga and Maria’s version of “Born This Way”? Tell us in the comments!

Mel Gibson Reaches A Plea Deal In Battery Case

Actor must complete 16 hours of community service and enroll in a 12-month domestic-violence program.

Mel Gibson and his legal team reached a deal with prosecutors Friday (March 11) that will see the actor avoid jail time after being charged with misdemeanor battery earlier in the day.

The actor appeared before a Los Angles judge and pleaded no contest to the charges. Under the terms of his agreement, Gibson must complete 16 hours of community service, enroll in a 12-month domestic-violence program and pay an assortment of court fees and fines.

Gibson also must obey a strict order to not annoy, harass or threaten anyone with violence while serving out his various punishments.

The actor has already begun reporting to a domestic-violence counselor and was ordered to submit a progress report during a status hearing June 9. By that date, the actor is also required to compete his community service, which he’s scheduled to perform at the Mending Kids International facility. Gibson’s deadline to complete his year of counseling is March 30, 2012.

The actor has 36 hours to turn himself in for booking.

The deal concludes an ugly split between Gibson and ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva, the mother of his young daughter. The two dated briefly after Gibson and his wife of 26 years, Robyn, separated.

Gibson and Grigorieva were ensnarled in a bitter custody dispute that was compounded by lawsuits the two filed against each other.

Gibson accused Grigorieva of extortion and she alleged Gibson physically assaulted her.

Diddy Doesn’t Get ‘Caught Up’ In Forbes Hip-Hop List

‘People think that I have that money actually sitting at home in the basement,’ Diddy tells MTV News of topping ‘wealthiest in hip-hop’ list.
By D.L. Chandler

Diddy-Dirty Money

Everything Diddy touches turns to gold — or millions, in this case.

The mogul with the Midas touch has topped yet another list — but it isn’t due to record sales for his new group Diddy-Dirty Money. Sean Combs tops Forbes‘ list of the wealthiest hip-hop entertainers, with his $475 million besting Roc Nation mogul Jay-Z by a mere $25 million.

Diddy spoke with MTV News about his inclusion on the list, flanked by his Dirty Money beauties, Dawn Richard and Kalenna Harper. “To be honest, on that list, I was on the cover of Forbes back in ’98,” Diddy said. “I been on that list. I don’t really get caught up into the list. I think people think that I have that money actually sitting at home in the basement.”

The figure, according to Forbes, includes current holdings and past earnings from public financial documents. Diddy confirmed that by humbly stating that, in order to have that manner of cash on hand, he would need to sell off all his companies and assets, something he takes great pride in.

“It’s really like if I sold all my companies, and I take pride in [building] something as a black man that’s worth that much,” Diddy said, but he added a warning with a laugh: “To everyone calling me for a loan today, I do not have that money today!”

Diddy and Jay are definitely not at war over the top spot on Forbes‘ list. In fact, Diddy hopes people are motivated by their success.

“It helps inspire people and it shows the power of hip-hop,” Diddy said.

Dr. Dre, 50 Cent and Birdman round out the top five.

Are you surprised that Diddy topped the list? Let us know in the comments!

Usher Says New ‘Rev Pop’ Project Is A ‘Movement’

Singer teases his new project by pointing to past hits like ‘Yeah!’ and ‘OMG.’
By James Montgomery

Usher
Photo: MTV News

With the success of songs like “DJ Got Us Fallin’ in Love,” “Hot Tottie” and “OMG,” Usher had himself a fairly massive 2010. But rather than rest on his laurels, he’s looking to build on his big year, not with an album, but with a “movement.”

It’s something he’s calling “Rev Pop” — or, simply, “Rev” — and though he’s already teased his idea in a video with David Guetta (Akon is also involved), he has yet to speak in full about it. So when MTV News caught up with Ush before the 53rd annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles at the (Belvedere) RED launch party, we asked him about his next musical endeavor. And though he didn’t reveal much, he did let it be known that “Rev” isn’t exactly something new. In fact, he’s been doing it for a while now.

“I’ll give it to you this way: At a later date, I’ll tell you more about Rev Pop, but if I were to give you a flash: I’ve done it before, I did it with ‘Yeah!’ ” he said, “taking a cultural experience, and also worldwide recognition of a feeling, and putting the soul in the middle of it. Not allowing it to shift heavily to R&B genre, or pop. I did it again with ‘OMG,’ once again putting the soul in the middle of it, which was an electric-pop experience, with the soul.

“It’s bringing those elements together to tell a story, that was born here,” he said, gesturing toward his heart, “And that’s what Rev Pop is. There’s more, I mean, I could really elaborate, but that’s just what I’m going to tell you right now. ‘Rev’ is what it’s called … the movement is called Rev.”

Usher wouldn’t say just when his fans would be getting their first taste of Rev, but whenever they do, it sounds like they’re going to be impressed … if not a little shocked.

“Stay alive,” he smiled, “Because you’re definitely going to be in for a surprise.”

Justin Bieber’s Hair Gets $40,668 At Auction

Proceeds will benefit animal-rights group the Gentle Barn Foundation.

Last week, shortly after the haircut heard ’round the world, Justin Bieber gave a lock of his famous hair to Ellen DeGeneres. The talk-show host graciously took the gift and promised to auction if off and give all the proceeds to charity.

In addition to the lock of hair, Bieber also signed a plastic box in which the hair would be kept. On Wednesday (March 2), 98 bids later, the Bieber memorabilia had sold for $40,668. All the proceeds from the hair will go to the Gentle Barn Foundation, a California-based animal-rights organization.

When Bieber appeared on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” to give the talk-show host the hair, he reassured her that it was, in fact, his. “Yes, it’s really my hair, but there’s a perk: I wanted to do something good. I’m giving pieces of it to different people,” he explained during the February 23 appearance. “The thing is, we’re doing something special. We want you to donate it to whatever charity you want.”

He also joked about what inspired him to cut off his signature locks. “I was inspired by yours,” Bieber laughed. “Yeah [people were freaking out], but I was like, ‘I don’t really care.’ ”

Perez Hilton was also one of the lucky hair recipients. On February 22, the blogger wrote, “Not only did Justin Bieber get a haircut, but the teen phenom tells us that he is going to be divvying up his shorn locks to help raise money for different charities. And, he’s giving Perez some of his hair to auction off! We’re working it all out now, and we can’t wait to tell you what good we hope to do with Bieber’s hair!”

What do you think of the final price for Justin’s hair? Let us know in the comments!

Adele’s 21 Debuts At #1 On Billboard 200

British singer knocks Justin Bieber from top spot, but Biebs still has two albums in top five.

We called it! As predicted on MTV News last week, Grammy-winning British soul sister Adele will nab the #1 spot on the Billboard 200 chart next week with her new album, 21, which sold 352,000 copies to easily take the crown.

According to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan, that was more than enough to outpace last week’s #1, Justin Bieber’s Never Say Never – The Remixes, which drops a spot to #2 as sales trailed off by 38 percent to 102,000. The 17-year-old pop sensation has nothing to worry about, though, as the remix effort was just one of two albums he has in the top five, the other being his nearly year-old My World 2.0, which lands at #5 on sales of 42,000.

In an otherwise slow week with few new releases, most of the rest of the top 20 saw double-digit declines, as the Grammy effect started to wear off on a number of artists. The rest of the top 10: Mumford & Sons, Sigh No More (#3, 71,000, down 46 percent), NOW 37 (#4, 58,000, down 37 percent), Bruno Mars, Doo-Wops & Hooligans (#6, 37,000, down 40 percent), Eminem, Recovery (#7, 34,000, down 44 percent), Rihanna, Loud (#8, 33,000, down 26 percent), Nicki Minaj, Pink Friday (#9, 32,000, down 30 percent) and Lady Antebellum, Need You Now (#10, down 67 percent).

Though she couldn’t pull off the Bieber top five double-play, Adele’s 2008 debut, 19, continues its march back up the charts, jumping 34 spots to #16 on sales of 18,000. Meanwhile, the short-lived Grammy bump for Arcade Fire seems to be over, as the disc slips five spots to #17 as sales plummeted by 59 percent to 17,000. And after coming in at #13 last week, Bright EyesThe People’s Key dives 28 slots to #41 as sales trailed off by 72 percent to 11,000.

Former Fall Out Boy singer Patrick Stump has a modest debut at #67 with his first EP, Truant Wave (7,000).

Things were much the same on the iTunes charts, where Adele tops the album tally, followed by Mumford, Bieber’s My World 2.0 and his remix album, then Adele’s 19, Rihanna, Lupe Fiasco‘s Lasers, Stump, Florence and the Machine‘s Lungs and Eminem.

Lady Gaga continues to lord over the iTunes singles chart with “Born This Way,” edging out Cee Lo Green‘s “Forget You.” Jennifer Lopez‘s “On the Floor” comes in at #3, followed by Rihanna’s “S&M,” Katy Perry‘s “E.T.” and Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep.” Rounding out the list are Dr. Dre and Eminem with “I Need a Doctor” (#7), Pink‘s “F—in’ Perfect,” Ke$ha‘s “Blow” and Bruno Mars’ “Grenade.”

Things should be pretty static at the top next week, with the only new releases coming from former Floetry member Marsha Ambrosius, as well as new albums from Lucinda Williams and Harry Connick Jr. and the debut from former Oasis singer Liam Gallagher’s new band, Beady Eye.

Ke$ha Says She’s ‘Disappointed’ By Grammy Snub

‘I plan on making a lot more records, and hopefully one of them will be Grammy-worthy,’ singer tells Vanity Fair.

Last year was full of breakout music stars, including Ke$ha, who ruled the scene with a string of dance-pop hits (and a massive overflow of glitter). But not everyone is a Ke$ha fan: The singer was snubbed when the 2011 Grammy nominees were announced in December.

The starlet recently spoke to Vanity Fair about the Grammy snub and said she’s determined to score a nod sometime later in her career. And after calling the Recording Academy’s award “not that big a deal,” Ke$ha admitted that she was saddened by her lack of nominations.

“Of course I do,” the singer said when asked if she wanted a Grammy. “I was disappointed that I didn’t get nominated. But I’ve only been around for a year. I’m friends with the Black Keys, and they were nominated for the first time this year. And they’ve been around for a decade. That’s like half my life, so I really can’t be a brat about it.”

Ke$ha isn’t bitter about the situation either, telling the magazine, “I plan on making a lot more records, and hopefully one of them will be Grammy-worthy.”

While she may not be gearing up for the big show on Sunday night, Ke$ha is prepping for the launch of her first North American headlining tour, the Get $leazy Tour. The country-wide trek is scheduled to kick off on Tuesday in Portland, Oregon, and continue through May.

Do you think Ke$ha deserved a Grammy nomination? Share your thoughts in the comments!

‘American Idol’ Experts Approve Of Ashthon Jones’ Elimination

Bloggers predict that Karen Rodriguez or Jacob Lusk could be next.
By Gil Kaufman

Photo: Fox

As “American Idol” marches on, it gets harder and harder to predict who might be going home from week to week. But in the early rounds, especially when producers throw a few wild cards into the mix, the job is a lot easier.

That was the case on Thursday night, when it was pretty obvious that baby diva Ashthon Jones was headed for the scrapheap of “Idol” also-rans.. Even though host Ryan Seacrest announced that the judges’ save is in play again this year, it was clear after another uneven run through Diana Ross’ “When You Tell Me That You Love Me” that Jones had run out of chances.

And, according to the “Idol” experts we’ve spoken to, America made the right call. “I hate to gloat, but I was right about Ashthon Jones!” crowed “Idol” blogger MJ Santilli about her forecast that Jones had blown out her last diva ‘do on national TV. “The young diva was chosen as a wild card by the judges for the top 13. She had very little screen time, and her performances on the ‘Idol’ stage were competent, but nothing spectacular.”

Popdust columnist Maura Johnston — who also was the special guest on MTV News’ “Idol Party Live” show show Thursday night — went with Selena-loving singer Karen Rodriguez and was chastened by her wrong call.

“Jones’ elimination was something of a surprise to me given that I’d picked Karen Rodriguez to go home on the non-strength of her limp Selena cover, but I probably shouldn’t have been too shocked; Karen got into the top 10 and Ashthon snuck into the finals as a wild card, so Karen’s previously existent support was probably a little bit stronger,” said Johnston. “And Ashthon went earlier in the night, so her somewhat forgettable performance could have become even more so once the time to pick up the phone (or the Facebook) rolled around.”

Despite the usual claims that the girls are as strong as ever this year, Johnston lamented that Jones’ exit could presage a string of consecutive female eliminations in the coming weeks as this season’s men appear to have stronger followings so far.

Santilli speculated that K-Rod, who was in the bottom three thanks to a tepid cover of Selena’s “I Could Fall in Love,” is probably headed home next. “Haley [Reinhart's] appearance in the bottom three was a bit of a surprise,” she noted of the soul singer who tried to mix it up with a yodeling LeAnn Rimes cover this week. “I thought Jacob Lusk, whose ‘I Believe I Can Fly’ was a hot mess, would share the stools of shame with Karen and Ashthon. If Haley can find her niche in the next couple of weeks, she might stick around. Jacob on the other hand, will probably be gone in the next couple of weeks. I don’t think his gospel style is resonating with ‘Idol’ viewers.”

In other “Idol” news, next week the top 12 will sing songs from the year they were born, and the show will feature performances from the Black Eyed Peas and last season’s “Idol” winner, Lee DeWyze.

Don’t miss “Idol Party Live” every Thursday on MTV.com, following the “American Idol” results show, for analysis, celebrity guests and even some karaoke — get in the conversation by tweeting with the hashtag #idolparty! Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez Just Latest Celebrity/Paparazzi Encounter

Big-name stars like Justin Timberlake, Kanye West and Britney Spears have also had tense run-ins with photographers.
By Jocelyn Vena

For many celebrities, their relationship with the prying lens of the paparazzi has always been love/hate. Some bask in the attention and others complain of being hounded relentlessly by hungry photographers. This week, Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez were caught up in a paparazzi kerfuffle while celebrating the Biebs’ 17th birthday in Los Angeles.

After giving the paps the finger during the encounter, Bieber later apologized via Twitter. But he’s only the latest in a long history of celebrity/celebrity-photographer encounters: Everyone from Lily Allen to Coldplay’s Chris Martin to Sean Penn (the king of paparazzi knockdowns) has had heated moments with the paps. Here, we look back at some of the more memorable run-ins.

Justin Timberlake and Cameron Diaz
Like Bieber and Gomez, then-couple Justin Timberlake and Cameron Diaz were involved in a scuffle with the paps in 2006. Diaz claimed a photographer tried to run her over, while the photographer claimed the actors had trapped him as he was trying to get away.

Björk in Bangkok
Björk lashed out a photographer at Bangkok airport in 1996, attacking a female photog who was trying to take pictures of her as she made her way through the airport. Things quickly got physical. The singer also attacked a paparazzo in 2008 in New Zealand, also at an airport, ripping his shirt.

Britney Spears and an Umbrella
During a more trying time in Britney Spears’ life, the singer, who had recently shaved her head, attacked a paparazzo’s SUV as a pack of photographers looked on. Using an umbrella to carry out the attack, it was believed that Britney was feeling the pressure of the prying paparazzi lens when she wailed on that car in 2007.

Russell Brand and Katy Perry
In 2010, Russell Brand attacked several paparazzi while he and his soon-to-be-wife Katy Perry made their way through LAX. Brand was convinced the photogs were tying to sneak inappropriate pics of Perry.

Kanye West and the Bodyguard
Kanye also had a moment with paps at an airport. West and his bodyguard Don Crowley got into a physical altercation with a photographer in 2008 at LAX. Both he and Crowley were accused of ruining camera equipment after a photog attempted to take the rapper’s photo.

Justin Bieber Tweets Selena Gomez Message, Drake Lyrics

“I miss you,” the Biebs posted to Gomez while on tour in Europe over the weekend.

Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez hit Twitter over the weekend and the world let out a collective, “Awwww!”

The Biebs, who recently took his act to Europe for his tour, seemed like he was missing his lady love and was not afraid to show it. On Sunday, he tweeted this simple message for Gomez: “I miss you.”

Selena didn’t let the post go unnoticed, as she very publicly responded to her beau’s online note just hours later. “I miss all of y’all,” she wrote.

When he wasn’t busy flirting with his lady on Twitter, Bieber was busy tweeting a series of lyrical snippets from Drake songs after posting a note that read, “favorite drizzy lines.” He also solicited fans’ favorite lines from the Canadian MC’s tracks.

Among the Drake tracks Bieber tweeted quotes from were “Successful,” “Shut It Down,” “The Resistance” and “Over.”

“I want it all thats y I strive 4 it, Diss me and you’ll never hear a reply 4 it,” he wrote. “This lost boy got fly without Peter Pan and my delivery just got me buzzing like the pizza man … You feel the hours pass until you find somethin’ I feel like when she moves, the time doesn’t … That’s word to the millions that they puttin’ up I’m tryna be better than good enough … I could teach you how to speak my language; [Rosetta] Stone I swear this life is like the sweetest thing I’ve ever known.”

In addition, Bieber took time to thank his fans for all their support and also shared his latest plans for his look. After causing a stir recently when he cut his hair, Justin revealed that he intended to undergo another hair-related style change. “Im not shaving for a month so you all can see my mustache… im pumped,” he shared.

What do you think about Justin’s latest series of tweets? Tell us in the comments.

Miley Cyrus Rocks ‘Saturday Night Live’

Superstar teen lampoons Lindsay Lohan, Justin Bieber and herself on sketch comedy show.
By Shawn Adler

For fans of Miley Cyrus last night’s “Saturday Night Live” had to seem, like, “pretty cool,” as the 18-year-old former Disney Channel Star made her first ever appearance as host on the long running sketch comedy show, alongside musical guest The Strokes.

From the very beginning, Cyrus made it clear she was not above lampooning herself, self-depreciatingly telling viewers during her monologue that “Hannah Montana” was The Disney Channel’s version of “Black Swan,” before transitioning into “I’m Sorry I’m Not Perfect,” a song which managed to walk the fine line of referencing nearly every scandal of the young performer’s still burgeoning career without actually apologizing for any of them.

“There’s a photo of me dressed like a dude, and Annie Leibovitz tried to get me nude. For those of you who think that’s pretty crude, I’m sorry I’m not perfect,” Cyrus belted.

“[I] didn’t make a dirty tape, and pass it along. Didn’t text a dirty picture of [my] dong,” she continued, flanked by cast members Bobby Moynihan and Kristen Wiig. “Don’t’ both of these things seem worse than a bong? I’m sorry I’m not perfect.”

The show’s midnight centerpiece was, predictably, “The Miley Cyrus Show,” which continued SNL’s recent tradition of having the target of their hijinks appear alongside the actor lampooning them. In this case, Vanessa Bayer, whose spot-on impersonation of the giggly, hyper-loquacious Cyrus has become a show highlight, made room on her mock talk show for Cyrus herself, who in her best impression of the night played Justin Bieber.

“Did you know I smoked salvia,” Bayer as Cyrus said to her guest.

“Well there’s no reason that you wouldn’t,” Cyrus as Bieber replied, looking straight into the camera. “Because it’s totally legal, yo!”

The spot offered up further opportunity for Cyrus to be in on the joke, dancing alongside a super sycophantic caricature of her father played by Jason Sudeikis, and laughing as Bayer introduced a 3D film called “Always Say Always” to compete with Bieber’s “Never Say Never.”

But while she took turns playing Bieber, Lindsay Lohan and Fergie among others, the most daring sketch of the night might have been the one where Cyrus played herself, in a bite the hand that fed you skit called “Disney Channel Acting School.”

Alongside Kenan Thompson as Raven Symone, Cyrus offered tips for kids looking to break into the big time with a show on the young adult channel including, “On the Disney Channel, every person has to be the loudest person in the room,” and, “In the Disney Channel world, any child is smarter than every adult.” Cyrus also showed off some classic moves like “Reacting to Stinky Feet” and “Spying in a Doorway.”

What did you think of Cyrus’s performance on Saturday Night Live? Which skit was the funniest? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Beyonce’s Mom Says Daughter’s Style Has Always Been ‘Edgy’

‘It’s just a result of her constantly evolving,’ Tina Knowles says of the fashion in Beyonce’s “I Am … World Tour” DVD concert special.
By Jocelyn Vena

Beyoncé has never been shy about hitting the stage in stunning costumes. Her appearance has always been a mixture of showgirl sparkle and pop star razzle-dazzle. And her style is on full display in her new DVD concert special, “I Am … World Tour.”

Her mom and stylist, Tina Knowles, said that while the looks may seem a bit edgier than what fans have seen from the singer in the past, she thinks that her superstar daughter has always been ahead of the style curve.

“Well, the wonderful Thierry Mugler designed the costumes, and I actually worked on some of the dancers and the band, and it was just amazing to work with him because he is so creative,” Knowles told MTV News at a New York screening of the special. “So it’s just a result of her constantly evolving, but she’s been edgy. It’s funny for people to say she went more edgy, but she’s been wearing body suits and that type of thing.”

And while Knowles may act as her daughter’s stylist and costume designer, she says that Bey’s style decisions are all her own. “Well, we discussed her working with Thierry Mugler, and I’m the biggest fan. And so she had seen some of the fashions and she loved it,” she said. “So we always discuss things, but it’s her decision, it’s her career.”

Beyoncé, who also directed the concert special , said it gave her a better understanding of the filmmaking process. “It was hard work,” she said. “I learned so much. I have a new respect for directors and I think I would like to do more of it. … Well, I’ve done some co-directing for music videos [but] this was definitely a big step for me, and I’m so thrilled.”

Ke$ha Enlists James Van Der Beek For ‘Blow’ Video

Singer and former ‘Dawson’s Creek’ star battle it out in her new music video.
By Jocelyn Vena

Ke$ha in her video for “Blow”

Ke$ha’s new music video for her song “Blow” opens with this disclaimer: “No mythological creatures were harmed in the making of this video.”

Ke$ha isn’t referring to “Dawson’s Creek” star James Van Der Beek, who makes a cameo in the video, which was directed by Chris Marrs Piliero. She’s referring to the champagne-swilling, hard-partying unicorns that also make an appearance in the video, which takes place at a society party.

Looking glossy and glam in her one-shoulder dress, she tells two unicorns, “I grabbed the bear by the throat, looked him right in the eyes and said, ‘Bear you have until the count of zero to put some pants on and apologize to the president. And that’s the story of how I was elected to the parliament of Uzbekistan.”

She then giggles as she looks into the camera, telling viewers to “dance.” Soon, she locks eyes with Van Der Beek. Ke$ha and Van Der Beek exchange glances as they make their way through the party. Scenes of their longing (and unicorns dancing with one another) are edited with scenes of Ke$ha, in a bodysuit, mugging for the camera, singing the song and kissing more unicorns.

Van Der Beek begins stripping off his suit jacket and dances his way towards the singer, who then pulls off her bra from under her gown. He follows suit, leaving viewers laughing and Ke$ha understandably perplexed about why he wears a bra under his dress shirt.

“Well, well, well … if it isn’t James Van Der Douche,” she says.

“I don’t appreciate you slander-beeking my name,” Van Der Beek replies.

After snipping at one another and trading barbs, they begin shooting lasers at one another in a battle sequence, knocking down and killing rainbow-shooting unicorns in the process. In the end, it’s revealed that Ke$ha has killed the actor and mounted his head on her wall, laughing off the encounter. The plaque in which his head is displayed reads “James Van Der Dead.”

What do you think of the new Ke$ha video? Tell us in the comments!

Beyonce To Star In Clint Eastwood’s ‘A Star Is Born’ Remake

Movie will be directed and produced by the Oscar winner.
By Kara Warner

Photo: Paul Warner/ WireImage

Beyoncé Knowles is headed back to the big screen and into the familiar territory of playing an aspiring singer-turned-superstar. According to Deadline, Knowles will star in a remake of “A Star Is Born,” to be directed and produced by Oscar winner Clint Eastwood for Warner Bros.

The remake will be the fourth telling of the “A Star Is Born” tale, the most memorable in recent years being the 1976 version with Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson as star-crossed lovers of sorts. It is also worth mentioning that the producers of that film, Billy Gerber and Jon Peters, are also attached to this new project. It is said to be a full-on musical with production set to begin sometime in the fall.

Naturally, the plot details are under wraps, but the original story revolves around an aspiring singer who meets and falls in love with a troubled, failing former star who helps get the young ingénue her big break in the business.

No announcements have been made with regard to the male lead, but the report mentioned that major names like Will Smith, Robert Downey Jr. and Jon Hamm have been floated around.

It’s definitely an interesting step for Knowles but not necessarily a surprise, given the fact that the majority of her film roles have been as singers (“Cadillac Records,” “Dreamgirls,” “The Fighting Temptations”). While many thought “Dreamgirls” would bring awards recognition for Beyoncé, Jennifer Hudson’s supporting role ended up garnering the most attention. With Oscar fave Eastwood at the helm of this new project, Knowles could be in line for some hardware yet.

Lady Gaga Wanted ‘Born This Way’ To Be ‘A Viral Message’

‘BTW’ video creative director Laurieann Gibson says Gaga recruited director Nick Knight to push the envelope.
By Jocelyn Vena

If it wasn’t clear from watching Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” video, the singer intended for the over-the-top clip to be a visual spectacle. And that’s why she wanted fashion photographer Nick Knight onboard to direct.

“Well, that was completely from the gate. She was like, ‘I want Nick Knight for this video, I want a visual,’ ” the video’s creative director, Laurieann Gibson, explained to MTV News. “She was always birthing something visual in her head. [Knight's] prolific, but he’s so genius visually. He’s such an Englishman. He’s so particular and everything must be spot-on. [The video] was about a beautiful photograph and it was about pushing the bar; it is a viral message. Nick was flawless.”

Many of the visuals in the video are tied to the dance, which Gibson choreographed for the splashy sci-fi-style video.

“At first, when I thought about birthing a new race and adding the prosthetics, I thought that maybe they should have a certain way they should walk or maybe they move a certain way, but then I realized it is actually a race within our race; it’s a mindset,” Gibson recalled. “So they don’t have to walk funny,” she said of the figures in the video.

Instead, Gibson focused on how she to interpret the song’s feel-good message in the moves. “So I just told the story of the record,” she said. “We birth ourselves out of the womb. There’s lots of pushing and birthing [in the video]. There’s lots of punching through the adversity, and then we go to church. So it’s very symbolic, it’s really based in modern dance: She’s doing [Martha] Graham. She’s doing [Lester] Horton. These are legitimate dance techniques.”

Lady Gaga Tears Up While Singing With Fan Maria Aragon

Gaga brings YouTube star onstage with her during tour stop in Toronto.

When 10-year-old Maria Aragon posted a video of herself on YouTube covering Lady Gaga’s latest pop smash, “Born This Way,” she probably had no idea what kind of opportunity the video would lead to.

It all started on February 17, when Gaga tweeted her praise for the young singer’s cover of her track. “Can’t stop crying watching this. This is why I make music. She is the future,” she wrote.

The love affair culminated in Gaga bringing the young Canadian fan onstage with her during her tour stop in Toronto. Gaga even posted a photo of them together backstage, making monster paws, each wearing T-shirts with the other’s image on it. Gaga shared, “Myself +10 year Old Lady Maria of Winnipeg. She signed my t-shirt, she ate my heart, just like you.”

In footage posted online, the crowd went crazy as the young singer took the stage decked out in a black leather jacket, a pink hoodie, sparkling black leggings and high-top sneakers. Gaga gave her a big hug, then sat down at the piano and put the girl on her lap as they sang “Born This Way” together.

“Maria represents what this song is all about,” Gaga told the excited crowd. “It’s all about the next generation and the future.”

As the pair sang the track acoustically, Gaga became visibly moved by the performance and tears began to form in her eyes. When the song ended, Aragon held up her stuffed orange monkey as she told the crowd, “I just want to thank all of you for your support. I hope you enjoyed it. Also, a shout-out to all my friends in Winnipeg and my family.”

Gaga continued to tear up as Aragon made her way offstage, telling the room, “Little monsters, thank Maria from Winnipeg.”

Daniel Radcliffe and Gary Oldman share a special sort of bond, one forged during the filming of 2004′s “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban” and then revisited during the more recent “Deathly Hallows” shoot.

“He’s always somebody who — just from being around, I don’t know whether it is from some kind of quite pure and childish desire to want to impress him or out of the fact that he just gets something out of me — having him around for some reason on the fifth film was such an amazing thing for me as an actor, and hopefully he’ll have that effect again,” Radcliffe told us back in the summer of 2009.

And, in turn, the impression Radcliffe left on Oldman lasts to this day and had the elder actor expressing his admiration for the boy wizard when he spoke to MTV News while promoting “Red Riding Hood.”

“As the books have got darker and as the books have got more complex, he’s in a different league,” Oldman said. “Who would have known that Emma [Watson], Rupert [Grint] and Daniel, at 11, would have had the chops to take it through to the end?’

Yet Oldman’s respect for Radcliffe extends beyond the “Potter” universe and to his other acting pursuits, like a risky stage play that required him to appear in the nude. “I don’t know many 17, 18-year-olds that would have done ‘Equus.’ And he’s now singing and dancing on Broadway. He pops up out of these holes. And he’s got f—-you money, so he can do what he wants. And [he's] dedicated, takes it very seriously and works very hard.”

Oldman said that Radcliffe’s turn in “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying,” which officially opens on Broadway in late March, is all part of a plan to challenge himself and successfully vie for roles with other actors on a level, non-”Potter”-assisted playing field.

“When I heard that he was doing the dancing, going into training, he said, ‘Look, I am not going to rest on my laurels and come out and think I’m going to get stuff because I was Harry Potter,’ ” Oldman said. ” ‘Once “Harry Potter” finishes, I’m in the arena with all those other actors who are going up for the job, who can dance and who can sing, and I have to compete with them.’ ”

Check out everything we’ve got on “Red Riding Hood.”

Linkin Park? U2? Ke$ha? Behind MTV’s Musical March Madness Selection

With the tipoff of our tournament set for Monday, Bigger Than the Sound breaks down your favorite band’s chances of busting the bracket.
By James Montgomery

Last year, when we launched the inaugural Musical March Madness tournament, we did it largely on a whim.

As I wrote when I revealed my original (handwritten) bracket, the basic idea was to combine my love of college basketball, gambling and rock music (and superfluous lists) into one magical event, and it really didn’t matter that I hadn’t figured out how bands would advance in the tournament or even what they’d get for winning. All I knew was that it seemed like a fun idea (especially since I didn’t have anything else to write my column about that week) and that somewhere, there had to be someone who cared about these seemingly disparate things nearly as much as I did.

As it turned out, there were a lot of people who cared, and when it was all said and done — thanks to the efforts of a whole lot of folks, including Newsroom blog editor Kyle Anderson, who basically decided “You know what? People should vote on this!” — not only was Musical March Madness a certified success, but we somehow even managed to get an actual trophy to present to the winners, Coheed and Cambria, too. So, really, everybody won.

Of course, given the success of the original MMM, attention quickly shifted to the 2011 tournament. Last year, I basically just threw together a list of 64 bands (65, actually; who could forget the epic Against Me!/ Creed play-in battle?). For the 2011 tournament, however, I did research, monitored album sales and basically became a Selection Committee of one. And, yes, it took way longer than I ever could have imagined.

So, with the 2011 Musical March Madness set to tip off Monday — when we reveal our full bracket of 64 bands and launch voting in first-round matchups — I decided to pull back the curtain on that selection process. Some teams have all but locked up their spots in the 2011 tournament, while others still have some work to do. In the spirit of all things bracketological, here’s my up-to-the-minute look at where your favorite bands stand for this year’s MMM:

The #1 Seeds
The biggest bands in the land. Last year, I gave out #1′s to Nickelback, Coldplay, Blink-182 and the Kings of Leon. Somewhat surprisingly, three-quarters of them ended up losing in the opening round of the tournament (only Blink survived, making it to the round of 32 before losing to 30 Seconds to Mars). Obviously, I overestimated the popularity of some of those acts, which means that, in 2011, to be a #1 seed, you have to have proven yourself as not only a rock-solid commodity, but an actual threat to win the championship too. Oh, and it wouldn’t hurt to have an album either in stores or coming soon. So here are my latest contenders for top seeds:

» Foo Fighters
» 30 Seconds to Mars
» Linkin Park
» My Chemical Romance
» Arcade Fire
» Vampire Weekend
» Muse
» The Black Keys
» Blink-182
» Radiohead
» Coldplay
» Mumford & Sons

The Foos have a hotly anticipated album coming down the pipeline, as does Coldplay. Are expectations enough to make them #1′s? Or will the committee recognize the breakout success of the Black Keys, Muse and Mumford? Does a #1 album and a shocking Grammy win earn the Arcade Fire a top seed? Linkin Park and MCR both scuffed a bit with their latest albums, but does that matter, especially since they’re both legacy acts with loyal fanbases (and, in the case of My Chem, are tournament-tested)? And will the committee ignore the fact that, by most accounts, Radiohead’s latest was a bit of a letdown or that Blink-182 may never actually release their new album? As you can see, there are still plenty of questions left to be answered.

The Old Guard
Legacy acts with something left in the tank. In 2010, time-tested faves like Slipknot, the White Stripes, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Sublime, Pearl Jam, U2 and the Dave Matthews Band all got invites to the big dance based largely on reputation alone (just think of them as the Dukes or Kansases of MMM). Of course, nearly all of them got knocked off in the first round, which means that this time around, reputation isn’t going to be enough to punch their tickets. Shoot, some of these acts aren’t even around anymore, which means that some deck-shuffling is in order. Here are the established acts that are still fighting for their tournament lives:

» Green Day
» Dave Matthews Band
» U2
» Red Hot Chili Peppers
» Rage Against the Machine
» Kid Rock
» Pearl Jam
» R.E.M.

Some (like the Chili Peppers and U2) have announced new albums this year, while others (like DMB) are planning to take 2011 off entirely. Still, whatever their status may be, the old guard remain forces at the cash registers and on radio, even if their latest albums didn’t exactly light the world on fire. And ignoring that entirely just isn’t possible. So how does the committee decide which make the field of 64? Good question. I’m still trying to figure out the answer.

The New Blood
Upset-minded young guns. The 2010 MMM featured up-and-coming acts like the Young Veins, 3OH!3, Owl City and MGMT. One year later, none of them are even on the radar. Picking new bands for MMM is always a challenge, though in 2011, there seem to be a handful who have all but secured their spots in the tournament, thanks to their breakout successes. I’m talking about the likes of:

» Mumford & Sons
» Florence and the Machine
» The Black Keys
» Cage the Elephant
» Sleigh Bells
» Adele

If the tournament started today, all of the above have been in (and some may even earn high seeds). But do any of them have enough to actually win the tournament? We’ll just have to wait and see.

The Bracket Busters
Bands with solid, if not spectacular, résumés (weak out-of-conference schedules, etc.). Last year, this included eventual champs Coheed and Cambria, Final Four acts like Tokio Hotel, Elite Eight bands like Panic! at the Disco and Owl City, and even Patrick Stump, who rumbled all the way to the Sweet 16. In other words, the 2011 champion could very well come from this group. Here’s my list of under-the-radar threats:

» Panic! (once again)
» Weezer
» The Decemberists
» Cake
» Paramore
» Avril Lavigne
» Crystal Bowersox
» Adam Lambert
» Death Cab for Cutie
» All Time Low

Two of the above — Cake and the Decemberists — have recent #1 debuts under their belts, while others have new albums on the horizon (DCFC, ATL, Avril). Others, like Bowersox and Lambert (who made the Sweet 16 last year), command insane fanbases, which make them dangerous on any day. Lavigne and ATL still have some work to do, but I’d consider all of the acts I just mentioned as safe for now.

The Bubble Bands
On-the-verge acts that need a little help to make it in. Maybe they win their conference championship, or maybe they PayPal the selection committee some cash, but these are the bands on the brink. In 2010, that included Panic! (no new album or single), the Gaslight Anthem (up-and-comers just learning to play together) and Coheed (largely ignored by mainstream radio). Most of those bands managed to do quite well in the tournament, while others, like Hollywood Undead, Lil Wayne, Them Crooked Vultures and the National, all flamed out in the tournament’s opening round. Somewhat fittingly, it’s a real feast-or-famine type of thing. Here’s my updated list of bubble bands:

» Cobra Starship
» Ke$ha
» Tokio Hotel
» MGMT
» Train
» Adele
» Bret Michaels
» Grace Potter and the Nocturnals
» Taylor Swift

Right off the bat, neither Ke$ha nor Swift really rock (though Ke$h does use Jack Daniels as mouthwash), which makes them long shots. Tokio Hotel have done next to nothing since last year’s tournament, but was their success enough to earn them a spot this year? Bret Michaels is basically indestructible at this point, so I’d consider him a lock. Cobra Starship are largely dormant but command a big enough fanbase to warrant consideration. MGMT’s last album stiffed in spectacular fashion, which places them squarely on the soapy surface of the bubble.

So, will your favorite band make the cut for the 2011 Musical March Madness tournament? As you can see, the Selection Committee still has plenty of work to do — which means that, between now and Monday, I’ll be burning the midnight oil, busting out the brackets and then re-busting them once again. It’ll be a chore, but I bet it will be worth it. And I hope you’ll be along for the ride. Your band needs you, after all.

MTV’s 2011 Musical March Madness Tournament begins Monday, March 14, when we reveal the full field of 64 bands that will battle for the championship. Winners are determined by fan votes, so if your favorite act makes the cut, it’ll be up to you to guide them to glory. You can rally the troops on Twitter using the hashtag #MMM — but get ready, it’s gonna be a war.

Ke$ha’s ‘Blow’ Director Addresses Lady Gaga ‘Unicorn’ Flap

Unicorn cameos in ‘Born This Way’ and ‘Blow’ videos is ‘just weird coincidence,’ Chris Marrs Piliero tells MTV News.
By Jocelyn Vena

The brand-new videos for Ke$ha’s “Blow” and Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” couldn’t be more different. But fans on the Web have been comparing the clips, thanks to a special cameo the two videos have in common. With unicorns appearing in both “Blow” and “BTW,” some Gaga fans are accusing the K-Dollar of stealing from their Mother Monster.

But MTV News spoke to “Blow” director Chris Marrs Piliero, who explained that it’s pure coincidence his video and the Nick Knight-directed video both feature unicorns.

“It’s very odd. It’s one of those weird things, and I think a lot of people on the Internet don’t grasp the sense of time [that goes into making videos]. Some Gaga fans, they don’t realize that just because it was announced there might be a unicorn [in Gaga's video], it’s like, we didn’t film the video after that announcement,” he said.

“It’s like [the movies] ‘Dante’s Peak’ and ‘Volcano’ and then there was ‘Armageddon’ and ‘Deep Impact.’ I don’t know, I know when things like that happen when I was a part of the audience, I was like, ‘That’s weird and fishy,’ but now being on the other side, it’s just weird coincidences,” he explained. “What are the odds of that?”

In fact, Piliero had a gut feeling that he should use unicorns many, many moons ago and he thought Ke$ha was the right artist to join with the mythological creatures onscreen.

“Ke$ha was looking to make kind of something different, a video that was cool and random, and I had this idea running in my head with just the idea of unicorns,” he recalled. “If I massacred unicorns, they could bleed rainbows. I’m a fan of violence and I’m always trying to find a way to make it OK.”

The rainbow-spewing unicorns weren’t the only cameo that Piliero hoped to nab. He also wanted “Dawson’s Creek” star James Van Der Beek to appear in the clip. “He’s such an awesome guy. He was down for it,” he said. “He had seen the Black Keys video [I shot] and he was stoked on the idea. It was so much fun. He and Ke$ha kind of went for all the craziness. I think he has a fantastic comic side. He’s good at being naturally funny. It’s about the delivery.”

Ke$ha, of course, was onboard for all the zaniness. “Before we started filming, we had quite a few talks. She was adamant you can’t back away from the crazy; everything about the idea she loved and she enforced the fact that she wanted to embrace every aspect of it and really go for it,” he recalled. “On set, she was having fun. She was like, ‘I want to lick a unicorn.’ It was rad working with her because there definitely wasn’t a sense of her feeling awkward about stuff or detached; no ego. It felt like we had worked together before.”

MSNBC Commentator Rachael Maddow Gives Props to Florida Death Metal

When political commentators mention extreme metal on the air it’s usually in reference to something tragic like a school shooting, church burning or suicide pact. Lady Gaga’s ‘Born This Way’ Fashions Decoded

While its visuals were no doubt memorable for fans of the “Born This Way” video, Lady Gaga’s funky fashions have also caught the eye of fashionistas everywhere. The video’s creative director, Laurieann Gibson, credits Gaga’s stylist, Nicola Formichetti, for embracing eye-catching couture for the Nick Knight-directed clip.

“When we found Nicola Formichetti — we found him when we were doing Much Music — before that we were just basically hustling and she was making a lot of the costumes, and we were grinding and America Apparel was our best friend,” Gibson recalled. “And then we found Nicola and he just got it. So when we’re on set, the Haus is such a collaboration, and Nicola is inspired and loves the passion of the dance. He is fashion, and him and Gaga together are magic. To see them push and pull, it’s just a real process. It’s like the Factory. It’s very Warhol how we operate.”

Formichetti blogged about the video’s expansive fashion credits. In the opening sequence of the video, the star wears a head accessory by Alexis Bittar, a diamond neckpiece by Erickson Beamon with earrings by Pamela Love, and a stained-glass dress by Petra Storrs. Gaga also wears finger rings by Erickson Beamon and the technical chiffon was designed by Thierry Mugler.

During the birthing scene, co-star Raquel Zimmermann wears a bodysuit by Atsuko Kudo and a neckpiece by the Baroness. Gaga wears shoes by Natacha Marro. In the following scene, Zimmerman wears boots by Kobi Levi. And for Gaga’s floating head scene, she wears Kudo and Levi, as well.

During the evil-Gaga gun scene, the singer dons knife shoes by Mugler, a dress by Sorcha O’ Raghallaigh and gloves by Portolano.

When the song finally kicks in, Gaga wears skimpy lingerie that includes a bra by OMD, underwear by NYC Sex Trash by Stephanie Paterek, gloves by LaCrasia and customized half-sole shoes by Capezio. She completes the look with a special “BTW” jacket by TomTom.

For the “Born This Way” skeleton scene, both she and her skeleton lover, Rico, wear tuxedos by Mugler. For the orgy, the slime is courtesy of Bart Hess. For her Michael Jackson impression in the alley, Gaga wears a shirt and pants by Haus of Gaga, shoes by Natacha Marro, a Billykirk belt and LaCrasia gloves. As the video closes out, the unicorn horn is courtesy of Jennifer Behr.

Avril Lavigne Talks Ex-Husband, Life Lessons

‘I was really happy to have him produce on this record,’ Lavigne says of Sum 41′s Deryck Whibley.
By Jocelyn Vena

This week, Avril Lavigne released her new album, Goodbye Lullaby, an emotionally charged record that will leave some fans wondering just who she is singing about. With a highly publicized divorce from Sum 41 singer Deryck Whibley and equally highly publicized romance with “Hills” star Brody Jenner, Lavigne says that she doesn’t really care if fans are trying to decode her songs.

“At this point, because I’ve been doing this for 10 years, I’ve kind of learned … my life lesson has been about not worrying about people and what they think,” she told MTV News. “Obviously I care. I want people to like my music and stuff. I’ve had to learn to really focus on myself: who I am, what I want … You don’t want to have distractions, especially when you’re being creative.”

Lavigne’s ex-husband Whibley worked on many of the album’s tracks. And considering how well the former spouses get along, the spunky pop star doesn’t seem bothered by public speculation about her personal life. “I respect Deryck so much as an artist, and he produced several songs on this record,” she explained. “I mean, he’s in a really cool band, he’s a writer and he’s a rocker.”

Whibley’s skills and the duo’s easygoing nature are what helped make magic happen in the studio. “He’s a musician. He does it all, and to have him come on this album and produce and mix, it’s like he’s so talented, I was really happy to have him produce on this record,” she added. “He did a really amazing job. We’re great friends and I’m grateful for the relationship.”

Exclusive: Ke$ha Talks Writing Britney Spears’ ‘Till The World Ends’

‘It’s an honor to write for one of pop music’s biggest icons,’ she tells MTV News.

Britney Spears’ new single, “Till the World Ends” is dance-floor ready — just ask Ke$ha. The pop star in her own right wrote the just-released track, which was produced by Dr. Luke and Max Martin.

“I consider myself a songwriter before and above everything else, so it’s an honor to write for one of pop music’s biggest icons. And I hope it gets everyone’s ass on the dance floor cuz y’all know that’s what K-Monay does best!” the singer said in an exclusive statement to MTV News.

The single was posted by Perez Hilton on Thursday afternoon (March 3), after speculation earlier in the day that it would hit radio next week.

“Till the World Ends” is a swirling, “beat the beat” track, ready for late nights spent “dancing till the world ends” as she sings on the fast-paced party jam. “This kitten got your tongue tied in knots I see/ Spit it out ’cause I’m dying for company,” a confident Spears purrs.

Later in the song, she sings: “See the sunlight/ We ain’t stopping/ Keep on dancing till the world ends/ If you feel it/ Let it happen/ Keep on dancing till the world ends.”

Last month, Ke$ha talked with Spin.com about the song, saying it’s about the power of an artist performing a great gig. “That song is me imagining her and any female musician touring the world,” she said. “You know, when you go out, and you’re having an amazing, magical night and you don’t want to go to sleep and you want it to last until the world ends.”

This new track is the latest single from Spears’ forthcoming Femme Fatale, which drops March 29.

What do you think about the latest Britney song?

Lady Gaga Makes Runway Debut At Mugler Fashion Show

Singer tries her hand at modeling in Paris, also previewing the song ‘Government Hooker.’
By Jocelyn Vena

Before Wednesday’s (March 2) Mugler fashion show in Paris even kicked off, fans were treated to some behind-the-scenes action as models and stylists scrambled to finalize the looks for Nicola Formichetti’s debut women’s-wear collection for the line. Perhaps the most famous model backstage? That would be Lady Gaga.

Mugler was the perfect line for Gaga’s catwalk debut — not just because creative director Formichetti is her stylist, but also because its gothy, latexy and glamorous aesthetic perfectly fits Gaga’s over-the-top style.

When the show did eventually kick off, Paris’ most fashionable, including Vogue editor Anna Wintour, filled the seats to see what Formichetti had up his sleeve. This season, the brand showed models styled with sleek ponytails and variations on the cat eye. The clothes had lots of leather, sheer fabrics and plastic-like garments that were equally futuristic and sophisticated, fitting perfectly to the model’s bodies. Shoulders were an emphasis of the ensembles, while pencil skirts and wide-legged pants also ruled. Blacks, Army greens and dark neutrals flooded the line, which also included wintery whites, leopard prints and cobalt blues.

Photos: Lady Gaga’s walk down the Paris runway.

Gaga hit the stage early in the show in her Mugler finest. For her initial appearance, she wore a version of a beret, two flowing pigtails, a dazzling diamond necklace, a sheer black top with a bra, a leather skirt and towering boots. Gaga posed and smoked a cigarette onstage as models, including Zombie Boy, tried to act like the superstar wasn’t onstage with them. As she walked off, cheers could be heard from the audience.

Gaga re-emerged for the close of the show in a flowing, white skirt with white bustier and super-high platforms. She completed the look with a white hat and sheer scarf. (Always self-aware, Gaga was heard telling handlers backstage before she hit the runway, “If I vomit on the stage, it would be good press.” She also was spotted practicing her fiercest strut.)

As “Born This Way” played out, the models took their final walks. Gaga hugged Formichetti as the designer came out for his bow. Backstage, as the live-stream cameras still rolled, Gaga took photos and got flowers.

In addition to playing “BTW” and “Scheiße,” Gaga debuted “Government Hooker,” a trance-y dance track about all things sexy in which she recites lines like “Put your hands on me.”

Lady Gaga’s ‘Judas’ Video Will Be ‘A Roller-Coaster Ride,’ Creative Director Says

‘I’m so excited for how riveting, energetic and electric the record is, something really phenomenal,’ Laurieann Gibson says.
By Jocelyn Vena

It’s an exciting time to be a Lady Gaga fan. This week, the pop star released her much-anticipated “Born This Way” video and walked the runway and previewed her track “Government Hooker” at a Thierry Mugler fashion show. And now there are a few more details about her next Born This Way single, “Judas,” and its video.

“We’re already getting ready to go into rehearsal [for the video]. She’s like, ‘I’m all ready to start ‘Judas’!’ She’s ready,” Gaga’s creative director Laurieann Gibson told MTV News. “And ‘Judas’ is exciting for me because we had this amazing artistic approach to ‘BTW’ and I’m so excited for how riveting, energetic and electric the record is, something really phenomenal. So, visually, the dance, the costuming, the idea of how big we’re trying to go, [it's] going to be a roller-coaster ride.

“There is [a director in mind],” Gibson continued, adding that nothing about the video will be ordinary. “What is a traditional music video? Even if we go with a traditional music video, the directors that we love are not traditional, so the idea that they get to collaborate with us means they too want to live outside of what people expect a traditional music video to be.”

As for the sound of the song, Fernando Garibay, one of the musical directors on the album, opened up about the RedOne-produced dance tune. “It’s a statement about, again I can’t speak for her, but what I gather is it’s about sometimes not choosing the right choice,” he explained. “But you can’t deny that the choice is not a part of you and who you are.

” ‘Judas’ is a dance song, definitely,” he continued. “I think ‘Judas’ is in the traditional RedOne/Gaga vein. It’s great because it’s a serious message, it’s a little playful, but still serious, but still somehow you wind up dancing to it. That’s what’s great about her music. You know, like, my favorite song of all time, dance song, ‘Billie Jean,’ is a story you wouldn’t think of singing, but then you wind up dancing and singing the lyrics. I think that’s the Holy Grail of music for me, which is dance.”

Gaga shared lyrics from “Judas” last month, and Gaga’s pal and stylist Nicola Formichetti reposted those lyrics on Twitter late Thursday. “I’m just a Holy Fool, oh baby he’s so cruel, but I’m still in love with Judas, Baby,” he wrote, adding, “JUDAS FASHION. so excited i can’t sleep!”

Britney Spears May Release Ke$ha-Penned Track As Next Single

‘Till The World Ends’ expected out sometime next week.

Slowly but surely, fans are getting a taste of what Britney Spears’ March 29 album release, Femme Fatale, will sound like. On Wednesday, Spears slowed things down with the tease for her track “Criminal” and psyched fans up with the news that she worked with Travis Barker on the album.

Fans are speculating that the next single released will be the Ke$ha-penned track, “Till the World Ends.” Art for the single’s cover, in which Spears appears sitting on a couch in a sweater and heels, was posted at Deezer.com.

A 30-second snippet of the song appeared on Amazon.de, which indicates that the single will be available on March 11. The track sounds like a fist-pumping anthem, and the sample showcases Spears’ electronically enhanced vocals going “Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh.”

The single will reportedly drop sometime next week, according to a tweet sent out by Tampa radio station 93.3 FM. “Hearing from Jive Records that we’ll have a new @BritneySpears single to play next week!”

Ke$ha recently dished about the track to Spin.com, noting that the song is about the power of an artist performing a great gig. “That song is me imagining her and any female musician touring the world,” she says. “You know, when you go out, and you’re having an amazing, magical night and you don’t want to go to sleep and you want it to last until the world ends.”

Spears’ longtime manager Larry Rudolph recently told MTV News that he’s super-excited about the next single off Femme Fatale. “I don’t think I’ve been this excited about releasing a Britney single in many, many years,” he said. “It’s that good. That’s all I’m gonna say about it at the moment. I haven’t heard a final mix of it, but I should get it in the next day or two. So far, what I’ve heard is just extraordinary. It really is amazing. Her fans will be very happy with it. I’m trying hard to get it out before the album comes out.”

For those keeping count, it’s not the first time Ke$ha and Spears have worked together. Ke$ha appeared on the Circus song “Lace and Leather.” “I just did backgrounds for her ’cause I was so broke. I needed to pay my rent,” she shared back in 2009. “I got a few bucks. No, [I didn't meet her]. I just did backups for her.”

Adele’s 21 Debuts At #1 On Billboard 200

British singer knocks Justin Bieber from top spot, but Biebs still has two albums in top five.
By Gil Kaufman

Lady Gaga Producer Calls ‘Government Hooker’ A ‘Beast’

DJ White Shadow talks to MTV News about the Born This Way track, which he dubs his ‘favorite song.’
By Jocelyn Vena

Earlier this week, fans got a taste of the new Born This Way track “Government Hooker,” which made its debut during a Mugler fashion show in Paris. The song’s producer, DJ White Shadow, called “Hooker” a thumping, sexy track.

“To me, that song is my favorite song, and it’s just a beast,” he told MTV News. “I don’t even know how to explain it. [Born This Way] is not a pop album; it’s a pop masterpiece of music. If there was no category of pop music, you wouldn’t call it pop music.”

Shadow recalled how the song came together — and let’s just say what happens in Vegas doesn’t always stay there. “We were in this studio in Vegas, and I was playing some hip-hop stuff [for Gaga's label boss Vince Herbert], and I ran across this [old beat I had made], and we were talking about faster songs, so I sped it up and I played it for Vince.”

It seems the new version of the beat, which Shadow had worked on with DJ Snake ages before he played it in that Vegas studio, was the magic that Herbert was looking for. “He was like, ‘Whoa.’ She walked in, and I played it for her and [producer] Fernando [Garibay]. She laid it out in two seconds. She sang over the melody and tuned it up and put the chorus in. She finished it super quick.”

There’s a Euro-sounding robot on the track, which comes courtesy of someone in Gaga’s inner circle. “The guy that’s actually talking, that’s her security guard,” White Shadow revealed. “We were sitting there thinking how to make a computerized voice, so we were like, ‘Let’s get Pete in here.’ He’s got a super-thick Dutch accent, and he’s trying to read off paper. It was insane, and he just talks like that. That’s what it’s like working with Gaga. It’s like a f—ing supernova. When she walks into a room, things explode.”

The lyrics, White Shadow said, were written right there on the spot. “She thinks of sh– that I can’t comprehend,” he said. “It doesn’t make sense to me, and I’m a creative person.”

A credit to her charm and smarts, Shadow summed Gaga up like this: “Working with her is totally different than anyone else I’ve ever done anything with. She’s the most hands-on person I’ve ever run into. She could walk into Steve Jobs’ office and tell him he’s doing Apple wrong, and he’d listen. As a producer, it’s super cool to be with somebody who generally cares and is fully involved.”

Beyonce Working With Kanye West Producer S1

‘Power’ producer tweets he’s ‘finishing up some monsters’ after week in the studio with B.
By James Montgomery

Beyoncé’s already taken inspiration from the likes of Michael Jackson and Lauryn Hill, hit the studio with a list of producers that includes Ne-Yo, Sean Garrett and Jim Jonsin, and now, she’s hoping to capture the surge of Kanye West’s “Power.”

B — who’s already hard at work on the follow-up to her massive I Am … Sasha Fierce album — just wrapped a week in the studio with producer S1, the man who co-produced “Power” and has logged time with the likes of Ghostface Killah and Erykah Badu.

S1 broke the news via his Twitter account and also posted a photo of himself and B over on his official site. And from the sound of things, the sessions, which took place in New York City, were definitely eventful.

“A couple of meetings then back in the lab with Beyonce today,” he wrote in one tweet. “Excited to see what we’re gonna create today after last night’s session.

“Not going to bed anytime soon. Beyonce got us in here working and I’m loving every bit of it,” he wrote in another post. “Finishing up some monsters … everything is sounding really great and big!”

There’s still not much information about Beyoncé’s new album, though in an interview with “Entertainment Tonight” last year, she said that, this time out, she’s aiming to “make [her] own genre of music.” In a follow-up interview with MTV News, she clarified that statement, explaining that she’s “mixing every type of genre that I love” on the new album, and added, “I’m not in a box. It’s not R&B. It’s not typically pop. It’s not rock. It’s just everything I love all mixed together in my own little gumbo of music.”

What do you think S1′s work with Beyoncé will sound like? Tell us in the comments!

Usher, Ke$ha And More Help Dance Music Go Pop In 2010

But is it here to stay? Our music-industry experts weigh in.
By Akshay Bhansali

Ke$ha

In 2010, pop princesses, R&B icons and chart-dominating newcomers all danced to the same beat. Not only did dance music go pop, but pop music caught the club-music bug.

Between Katy Perry’s “Firework,” Ke$ha’s “We R Who We R,” Rihanna’s “Only Girl (In the World),” Enrique Iglesias’ “I Like It,” Usher’s “DJ Got Us Fallin’ in Love” and “OMG” and countless other singles, established artists definitely looked to dance beats for surefire hits. And two of this year’s biggest success stories in music were Jason Derülo and Taio Cruz; could there be a soul left in this country who hasn’t heard “Dynamite” or “In My Head”?

The love went both ways, with dance music’s biggest stars finding mainstream success this year. Dance-music maestro deadmau5 took up house-artist duties at this year’s VMAs, and Swedish House Mafia and Usher teamed up for a medley of their gems at the American Music Awards.

So how did this happen? We caught up with some music-industry experts to get their takes.

“You definitely saw tempos go up this year,” Jon Caramanica of The New York Times told MTV News. “And I think what you had are a lot of producers who are really familiar with nightclub stuff. They are familiar with Europe. Things are happening on a more global scale now.”

“I think everything from Europe, and sometimes even Asia, it comes to America, and we just adopt things a little bit slower,” said Jared Eng of JustJared.com. “I think it was just a change. People like different types of music at different times. And dance was of this moment.”

Noah Callahan of Complex magazine added: “I think 2010 saw the merging of the pop and dance genres. Pop artists realized that there were best practices that could be borrowed from dance music. And, ultimately, [all] pop music that has been made in the past 20 years had ended up being remixed for the club by dance artists. I think they basically just cut out the middleman and went straight there.”

Dance music being introduced into the hip-hop and R&B realms was particularly notable this year.

“I think David Guetta kind of at the end of last year and the beginning of this year spearheaded it,” said freelance writer Julianne Escobedo Shepherd. “He produced a lot of tracks. I think as trends go, people revile ‘unst-unst.’ But it’s just coming back around. Big-room techno was a way for people to get decadent in a year that no one could get decadent.”

“You have someone like will.i.am, who’s like, ‘Well, I spent all this time in Ibiza, and this is what they are doing,’ and he wants to find a way to bring that into his music,” Caramanica said of the Black Eyed Peas mastermind. “R&B especially became dance music. And especially with your Jason Derülos, Taio Cruzes. Guys like that would have literally been blocked at the border two years ago. That would not have made it through customs. And now all of a sudden they have #1 songs. I think will.i.am had a lot to do with that last year.”

Elliott Wilson of RapRadar.com added: “It’s actually even affected hip-hop. I was talking to Q-Tip, and his next record, I feel like that’s gonna kind of go in that vein. I know that was also Jay-Z’s thought process with Blueprint 3 at first, that he wanted to make a little bit more of a world music [vibe], a little more dancey. I think the kids today want to go to the clubs. They wanna have a good time. They wanna dance. So I think the artists of today are trying to kind of feed that audience.”

“I think it’s caught on this year because the people who’ve done it have been successful,” offered Clover Hope of Vibe magazine. “Like ‘OMG,’ with usher, he didn’t have success until he made a dance record. He had ‘There Goes My Baby’ and these really, like, adult-contemporary records that didn’t really catch on. And then once you see that everybody is doing it and that people are liking it, they are like, ‘OK, let me just try this out.’ It’s like Auto-Tune. Like, ‘Let me see what I sound like on a record by David Guetta.’ They end up liking it and doing more of it.”

So does the club-music trend have staying power. According to our tastemakers, not so much.

“I do think it’s a blip,” Caramanica said. “I don’t think that’s gonna be something that lasts in America. I think this is gonna be a moment we’ll all look back on and go, ‘Wasn’t that weird when Jason Derülo and Taio Cruz had #1 records?”

“At some point, these R&B artists will get kind of sick of it and be like, ‘Let me go back to my soul background,’ ” Hope said. “When you actually have to say something, dance doesn’t really lend itself to substance. And I think that R&B artists, they really want to talk about love and in a deep way, and to do that, you need to do, like, a soul or a traditional R&B record. I want to say that it’s kind of a fad.”

“I think music is very cyclical,” Eng offered. “So I think dance music might be here for a little bit, but I’m sure it will phase out at some point.”

Wilson called dance music “the sound of today. I think that people want more aggressive, faster beats, and I think that that probably has legs until at least next summer.”

What do you think? Is dance music here to stay? Let us know in the comments!

Justin Bieber Apologizes For Paparazzi Run-In

Plus, Selena Gomez’s rep denies she was attacked by a jealous Bieber fan.

Justin Bieber has experienced the many highs of fame, what with chart-topping albums, a blockbuster movie, sold-out tours and a dedicated fanbase. But on his 17th birthday, the star also came face-to-face with the one main drawback of being a celebrity: the onslaught of the paparazzi.

While Bieber was celebrating his birthday in Los Angeles on Tuesday, the star and his lady, teen queen Selena Gomez, were surrounded by paparazzi while leaving Maggiano’s Little Italy restaurant, Popeater reported. In the heat of the moment, Bieber gave the hungry photogs the middle finger, while Gomez shielded her face from their flashing cameras.

Bieber later took to Twitter to clear the air about the incident and apologize for reacting the way he did. “Had a great bday and at the end of the night we got surrounded by paps and I reacted in a way I know better. I’m sorry #killthemwithkindness,” he shared, adding, “It’s not always easy but I know better than to react in anger.”

Shortly after that, rumors began to surface that Gomez was shielding her face from the many camera lenses because she had allegedly been punched by an angry Bieber fan over her relationship with the pop star. The Twitter trend #sorryjustin had some speculating that fans were apologizing for that one fan’s incident with the actress/singer.

But Gomez’s rep told People.com that there’s “absolutely no truth” to any of that. Photos from the night do, however, show what appears to be an injury of some kind on Gomez’s lip.

‘Last Comic Standing’ Finalist Mike DeStefano Dead At 44

“Last Comic Standing” finalist Mike DeStefano died Sunday after suffering a massive heart attack, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

A rep for the 44-year-old DeStefano, who was a finalist on the NBC reality competition, confirmed the news in a statement to TMZ. “It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of a dear friend, a true gentleman, a great comic, and a fierce warrior, Mike DeStefano,” his rep said. “Mike had a lot of wisdom to share with the world from his own life lessons and he always did it with laughter and a smile.

“It’s hard to think that there won’t be any more ‘hey sweetheart’ calls, because Mike always made my day with his mix of kindness and warmth AND profanity filled rants against the wrongs of the world. He was the genuine article. We love you and will miss you, Mike,” the statement continued.

A former heroin addict, DeStefano had been clean for 11 years as well as HIV positive at the time of his death. Prior to competing on “Last Comic Standing,” the Bronx native had appeared on other shows, including “Late Night With Conan O’Brien” and Comedy Central’s “Live at Gotham.” The comic was set to take his one-man show “A Cherry Tree” back to his home borough on Wednesday. He had also recently wrapped up a line of sold-out shows called “Drugs, Disease and Death: A Comedy.”

Share your condolences for DeStefano’s family and friends in the comments.

Deadmau5 Brings Dance Music To The ‘Masses,’ Wolfgang Gartner Says

‘He has a major role in the younger generation to this music,’ producer/DJ tells MTV News of his collaborator.
By Adam Stewart

It’s no secret that 2010 was a pivotal year for electronic dance music here in the States. With deadmau5 and Swedish House Mafia becoming household names, the genre’s momentum shows no signs of slowing down. Using a conduit of collaboration, artists such as deadmau5 (a.k.a. Joel Zimmerman) have paired up with various underground acts to further the rapid expansion of the genre.

Perhaps one of the most notable movers and shakers of the year is now-Grammy-Award-nominated producer and DJ Wolfgang Gartner, who recently sat down to chat with MTV News about deadmau5 and dance music’s rise to the top.

“He has a major role in the younger generation to this music,” Gartner says, “but there have been certain artists that have been instrumental in helping it cross over and reach the mainstream — which I think is a good thing. I think rap artists using dance beats is a great thing. I think it just brings more people towards this music that we all love.”

Thanks to several key moments, such as deadmau5 taking the helm as house DJ (well, technically “House Artist”) for the 2010 VMAs, dance music has been thrown into the forefront of America’s youth, a key demographic for any genre.

“Everybody knows who he is now and he’s kind of exposing the masses to dance music. These little five-, six- and seven-year-old kids latch on to this ‘mau5head’ logo — they get into the music and he’s bringing this tiny young generation into this music that probably wouldn’t be exposed to it.”

Gartner certainly doesn’t mind the exposure either. Unless you were living under a rock for the past six months, you probably heard one of this past summer’s hottest anthems, “Animal Rights,” a collaborative effort brought forth by deadmau5 and Gartner.

“It was interesting because I kind of had a preconceived notion about how he would be to work [with],” said Gartner. “I think our sounds are really similar, so I figured he would work in a similar way to me, but the way that he writes music is actually completely different to me. But he achieves kind of the same sound through a completely different process.”

Recorded in deadmau5′s favorite Los Angeles studio — that would be rocker Tommy Lee’s House — “Animal Rights” is a thumping progressive house anthem that melds Wolfgang’s unmistakable harmonics and funk riffs with the driving bass line and wobbly synths that make deadmau5 one of the unique forces in the dance music world.

“[Deadmau5] writes these rich complex chord progressions and he does it by drawing these little bars on a grid, which is just amazing that you can do that and get that result,” Gartner goes on to say. “It just proves you don’t have to be able to play keyboards to write amazing music.”

The two sound pioneers never cease to stop pushing the limits on what they are able to produce. Using drastically difference production approaches, deadmau5 and Gartner had the ability to play off each other’s strengths while recording the track.

“I’d say the biggest thing is that I play everything in on a keyboard, like even my drums,” says Gartner. “I play everything in live and he draws it in with notes on a mouse, which blew me away because his music is very musical.”

What do you think 2011 will hold for deadmau5 and Gartner? Let us know in the comments below!

4. Michael Bay, $120 million
5. Tiger Woods, $105 million
6. Jerry Bruckheimer, $100 million
7. Steven Spielberg, $100 million
8. George Lucas, $95 million
9. Beyoncé, $87 million
10. Dr. Phil, $80 million
11. Simon Cowell, $80 million
12. Jerry Seinfeld, $75 million
13. Britney Spears, $64 million
14. Lady Gaga, $62 million
15. Madonna, $58 million
16. Sandra Bullock, $56 million
17. Ellen DeGeneres, $55 million

Justin Bieber’s Grammy Performance Will Be ‘A Crossover,’ Usher Says

The ‘O.M.G.’ singer looks forward to sharing the stage with his protégé on Sunday night.

HOLLYWOOD — At Sunday’s 53rd Grammy Awards, Usher will be pulling double duty as both a nominee and a performer. Of course, given the massive year he just completed — with the success of his smash single “O.M.G.” and as a mentor to rising phenom Justin Bieber — Ush’s Grammy plans seem rather fitting.

Especially since he’ll be performing with Bieber (and Bieber’s pal Jaden Smith), a move that’s just as much about celebrating Usher’s successes as it is the successes of his young protégé.

“Having been through [the Grammys] so many times, you couldn’t want for anything more than for your young protégé to have the opportunity to have one, so, in support of him having his moment, I wanted to be here,” Usher told MTV News on Thursday, hours before his performance at the (Belvedere) RED launch party in Hollywood. “And also to be there to perform, to kind of tell the story of how we came together. This music business has definitely been good to both of us, and this year we have a lot to be happy for.”

And just how will the dynamic duo tell that story? Well, Usher wasn’t about to reveal all the details, but he did say that he’s hoping their performance will show another side of Bieber … a side most tend to overlook.

“The performance will be fun,” Usher explained. “We want to get up there and just do what we do. Be comfortable, and have a great time. … This is kind of a crossover for Justin. Having performed on so many different stages, this is the way that I wanted him to be seen and an opportunity to show the industry — a lot of the industry, that didn’t believe [in him] — some of his other talents. He’s going to play acoustically, and also, we’ll get down a little bit.”

And though Ush is up for a pair of Grammy awards on Sunday — Best Male R&B Vocal Performance and Best Contemporary R&B Album for Raymond v. Raymond — he’s most looking forward to sharing the stage with Bieber and giving fans a look at where the young artist will be heading next.

“I’m very proud, man. I definitely saw it from the beginning, but thanks to the team that we have around us, it was made to happen. And that story has only just begun,” Usher said. “The story of Justin Bieber doesn’t stop with screaming girls; we need screaming fans all around the world … a cultural experience that’s much more than just fanfare. And that’s what this is. That’s what the Grammys will be; that’s what my next phase for Justin is. This is the way I found him: I found him with a guitar in his hand, so I want him to be seen that way.”

Meanwhile, on Earth, Waka Flocka was relatively lauded by Pitchfork and Gucci Mane was jailed for driving shitty way too early in the morning but quickly (whew) released. So let us [...]

Tyler Perry has yet to crack the Oscar ceiling, but the multi-hyphenate took home the gold at the NAACP Image Awards Friday night (March 4), winning Best Director and Best Picture for his “For Colored Girls. The flick also nabbed a statue for co-star Kimberly Elise, who won for Best Supporting Actress.

Based on Ntozake Shange’s 1974 Broadway hit “For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf,” Perry’s film follows the lives of nine black women in and around Harlem, all of whom are confronted with an interpersonal crisis.

While ostensibly about trouble and heartbreak, the flick is really about “basic human love and regard for one another,” Elise told MTV News.

“[It's a] great statement on sisterhood and community,” Elise said of the movie. “I think you do leave the film feeling like, ‘I am woman, I can do this, I can stand on top of this pain and especially with my sisters around me.’”

To nab the award, Elise had to best three of her co-stars from the ensemble flick, Anika Noni Rose, Phylicia Rashad, and Oscar winner Whoopi Goldberg. The fifth nominee, Jill Scott, was also singled out for her performance in a Perry flick, “Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married Too?”

Among other film winners, double Oscar winner Denzel Washington took the trophy as Best Actor for “The Book of Eli,” Halle Berry won Best Actress for “Frankie & Alice,” and Samuel L. Jackson nabbed Best Supporting Actor for his turn in “Mother and Child.”

In the musical categories, Usher, who recently agreed to donate to charity all proceeds from an appearance at a New Year’s Eve concert linked to Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi, won Best Male Artist and Mary J. Blige won for Best Female Artist.

Presented by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the NAACP Image Awards celebrate “the outstanding achievements and performances of people of color in the arts,” according to their website.

While they’ve never spoken publicly about dating one another, Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez proudly had their relationship on display when they hit up the famous Vanity Fair Oscar party right after the 83rd Academy Awards telecast wrapped.

The pair didn’t do press on the red carpet, but they looked relaxed as they posed together for pictures. Bieber’s arm was around Gomez’s waist as they smiled for photos. She was wearing a red Grecian-style gown. Bieber was in an all-black tuxedo with a red pocket square, matching his date for the night. They took photos as a pair, but also individually. Inside the party, Bieber and Gomez posed for pictures with fellow teen star Hailee Steinfeld, held hands and looked at each other’s phones while they texted inside the fete.

The glamorous party was attended by some of Hollywood’s biggest names, including Gwyneth Paltrow, besties Taylor Swift and Emma Stone, couples like Jessica Biel and Justin Timberlake, as well as Oscar winner Natalie Portman and her beau, Benjamin Millepied. Among the other A-listers there were Jamie Foxx, Jake Gyllenhaal, 50 Cent, Reese Witherspoon, Michelle Williams and Jennifer Hudson, to name a few.

“Good luck to my friend Hailee Steinfeld tonight on the #oscars. young people going for theirs! also want Christian Bale to win. #TheFighter,” Bieber tweeted early on Sunday, before adding this message about his fame: “im never gonna change … i will always remember … i will always be that kid from Stratford … I will always be grateful.”

For her part, Gomez simply tweeted, “Vanity Fair fun!” She included a photo of herself with Bieber, Bieber’s manager, Scooter Braun, and his date.
